What Happened to Ropes in Gym Class?

Hey all you Wicked Iron Underground Cronies, I have a question for ya.......What the hell happened to climbing ropes in Physical Education???? Being an 8th grade teacher, I get a chance to see what my students get for a phys-ed program, and I am not impressed. Maybe it is just my school, or my state (Maine, which happens to have a HUGE obesity problem), but all I see is the phys-ed teacher teaching the kids whatever that season's sport is! Right now Basket ball is in full swing, so what are our students practicing???? Basket Ball. What happened to training our students to be strong, agile, and confident??? The only time I see our kids doing body weight exercise is when the teacher has to do the yearly physical health check. Only then are they doing sit-ups or pull ups. The rope has gone the way of the dodo. Do you remember when you were just a young'un and you were playing on the monkey bars at the playground? Did you ever have a climbing rope out there too? Wasn't it the most fun you ever had, climbing stuff, testing yourself?
The rope climb has been made to look like the most vile of gym class physical feats. What movie that is about high school, does NOT have the rope climb in it? All the popular kids who CAN climb, standing around watching all the kids who CAN'T climb, try to get up that rope. In terms of fitness, our kids need to do that stuff, without the harsh environment of the Hollywood gym class scenario. We here at the Wicked Iron Underground look at fitness as functional....That means we try to do things that have every day application. What happens if you are out and about hiking one day and you fall off the edge of a cliff? On your way down you grab on to a large root and stop yourself from plummeting to your death. Now what do you do? CAN you climb up and save yourself? Or do you hang on until your grip gives out and you die anyway, only delaying the inevitable? I know what you are thinking, that is a pretty extreme case sir, that wouldn't happen on a daily basis....Well, being prepared never hurt anyone. Besides, climbing rope builds grip strength, it helps build up your lats, your back, and your core. Try climbing rope without tightening your stomach....You can't.
All these muscles help you in your every day life, whether it be a construction worker, or a busy mom lifting groceries out of the back of an SUV.
I say, bring back strength and conditioning. Make our kids healthy and strong, just like we want for them. Take away the video games and the cell phones and the computers for a while, and make them do SOMETHING active. Something that will challenge them physically and mentally. Work out with your kids! That way you both benefit, and you get some parent-child bonding done as well. Our biggest problem is taking responsibility for our selves and our kids. If we don't do it ourselves, our kids won't do it for THEMSELVES, and then you can't help them.
BRING BACK THE OLD DAYS! STRENGTH AND FITNESS FOR ALL OUR CHILDREN!

Kettlebells, Tires, and Hammers, OH MY!

We here at Wicked Iron Underground believe in functional strength training....That is why we use anything and everything to get the job done!

Kettlebell training is the best and most effective functional strength training tool on the market today...Just like it was a hundred years ago in Russia. Let us show you how to become stronger, faster, and more flexible than you have ever been in your life, just using this simple cannonball with a handle.

Tires.....They are great for a lot of things. For instance, they are great at getting you back and forth to work, school, or the shopping mall. However, they are also an exceptional tool for strength and endurance training. I'm not talking about the tires on your car....I'm talking about the tires off of some guys tractor...and because we're in Maine....Off your grandad's Skidder! Get a big tire, (one of ours is over 300 pounds) and start flipping it end over end....You will know what I mean when you try it!

Hammers. Am I asking you to build a mansion??? Nope... I am asking you to think outside the proverbial box. Take two small 4 pound sledge hammers, also called a single Jack in the olden days, put one in each hand, and start smashing the hell out of something solid...What do I smash you ask??? Well...Why not that brand new skidder tire you just flipped over! Time yourself for a minute, two minutes, more....Now tell me, did you puke???
If you didn't you weren't working hard enough. If you can't do it yourself, please, sign up with us and we will do it for you!

If you are broke and can't afford weights, why not use rocks...Get the biggest rocks you can handle and start doing squats, curls, clean and jerks, chest presses...you name it, it works!

Got a little scratch and a big imagination??? Concrete is your answer. Get your behind to the Home Depot or Lowe's, buy a bag of Quikcrete, and you are in business. All you need is a piece of iron pipe, and two of those rubber balls you find at Wally World. Cut a hole in the ball, place one end of the pipe inside, fill with Quickcrete and water, wait...............Cut the rubber off one end, repeat the process on the other end, and there you have it. A new concrete globe barbell!

Chains!!! You got some....use them. Want to know how??? Give us a shout.

The bottom line is this...People used to train with whatever they had back in the day. Rusty iron, huge stones, hammers, you name it. For decades Americans have been getting fatter by the minute, huge fitness facilities sprang up all over the continent in response to our demand to back into shape. These facilities packed the people in, gave them treadmills and elliptical machines and said "there you go, now you are in shape!" Wrong!

The only way to get into shape is to build muscle. Muscle kills fat. And you don't have to pump the iron like some roided out behemoth. There are many tools to gain strength and cardiovascular health, the problem is, do you know what they are?

We do, and We can help you.
